The Colossal Lie

The Colossal Lie“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

But warn them not of the rocks and the shoals of our capitalist intrigues

or the empty sirenian promises of false freedom, equality and plenty.

Don’t tell them they’ll be our wage-slaves and we’ll be their masters.

Hint not at all of the misery and penury that most assuredly will come.

Wave upon wave, wave upon wave, – of these ignorant immigrants.

Wave upon wave, wave upon wave, – replacements for homicides/suicides.

Wave upon wave, covered in the froth and sucked down in the undertow.

Drowning, dying, still clinging to that sodden, disintegrated, papier-mâché

artifact called The American Dream.
